Did you know?
During China’s Cultural Revolution millions of urban youth, known as the “Educated Youth,” were sent from cities to remote villages in the “Down to the Countryside Movement.”Launched by Mao Zedong to disperse Red Guards and “re-educate” them through manual labour, the policy displaced around 17 million young people. Their studies were cut short, many endured harsh conditions, and a “lost generation” emerged. Even today’s President Xi Jinping was among them, living for seven years in a cave dwelling.
