During the English Civil War, Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarian forces actually banned Christmas celebrations for over a decade! The Puritan-dominated Parliament considered the traditional festivities—which often included drinking, gambling, and feasting—to be too disorderly and a remnant of Catholic practices. Christmas was officially banned in 1644, and soldiers were even ordered to patrol the streets and seize any special Christmas dinners being prepared.
