The "Wars of the Roses" wasn't actually a term used by people living at the time? The name was popularised much later, in the 19th century, by author Sir Walter Scott in his novel Anne of Geierstein. The white rose of York and the red rose of Lancaster were indeed significant symbols, but the widespread use of the term "Wars of the Roses" to describe the conflict did not emerge until long after the last battle.
